Is autumn the new spring?
We’re all familiar with the concept of the ‘spring clean’ and the need to spruce the home up after a long winter. Now, heaven forbid, there’s a growing school of thought that believes you need to give your home a thorough going over more than just once a year. Here are a few of the chores that are best done in your autumn clean:
Change your bedding: It’s a bit depressing to say good-bye to the summer, but now is the time to swap your lightweight duvet for a heavier one so you’re ready for winter. The same applies to the bed linen and you might prefer to opt for stronger, bolder colours to give you a cosier feel as the evenings draw in.
Check your wardrobe: All of us have clothes tucked away at the back of the wardrobe that we never ever wear, but are reluctant to throw out. Now is the time to give everything the ‘12-month test’. If you’ve worn any item of clothing no more than once in the past year, then you can surely do without it. Go through the kids’ wardrobes too and pull out any items they’ve outgrown. If the clothes are still in good condition, you might want to pass them on to friends or a charity shop.
Service the boiler: Like the rest of the family, your boiler has had an easy time of it over the summer, but that’s soon about to change. Book up a visit from a heating engineer to check your boiler is ready for the tough months ahead.
Clean your chimney: If you’re lucky enough to have a real fireplace, now is the time to get an expert in to make sure your chimney is free from soot and other debris. Get it sorted and you’ll feel much more relaxed, as you sit there in your favourite armchair, in front of a blazing fire.
Check your smoke alarms: On the subject of fire, remember to check that your smoke alarms are working properly and all batteries have been replaced.
Organise your holiday pics: Some chores can be fun to do and this certainly falls into that category. Relive the happy memories as you go through your photos, picking out your favourites to put in an album. Now would also be a good time to check that all your old albums are still in good condition.
If you can’t face doing another big clean after it seems like only a few ago weeks that you did the last one, why not bring in Molly Maid to help with a one-off blitz? You can use your own time to do something much more fun.
